Dear Hanna Fans

Journal Entry: Sat May 21, 2011, 2:17 AM

I will preface this statement by saying that I respect an, artist's right to be silent if they so choose. It is not my place, even as a publisher to speak for the artists I work with or about various aspects of their work that are beyond my control. For those matters, I will simply defer to the artist, and respect their reasoning for making the decisions they do.

Because of that I will only make this statement: As far as I know, Tessa Stone is absolutely fine.

I do not feel it is my place to make any statements beyond that.

Good to hear that. Err, considering the significant time frame since she's posted anything, and reading some of the comments here, it'll probably be...intimidating for her to jump back in the fray, when or if she does. My sympathies go out to her, whatever's up.

Well that's a relief. I am unsure what problems she's going through, but I hope she realizes how lucky she is to have such a dedicated fanbase. As bitter as some of them feel, there's no doubt the 90% will jump back onto the worship wagon once she returns.

Wish she'd come back. She's an amazing artist. I just love her style.

I'm glad to hear that she's okay, as much as I love Hanna and want to read more of it, I understand that she's a human being with limitations. I just hope that she knows that most of her fans wish her well.

I don't even care what kind of bullshit you're caught up in, it's disrespectful and flat-out stupid to publish a comic, let it get popular, and then vanish with no bloody word whatsoever. I'm glad she's "fine" and all, but on the flip side if nothing's physically stopping her from taking two freaking seconds to make a comment on the matter, then the only other option for the prolonged silence is that she's being a dick. Which we sort of already knew, no matter how many false platitudes people throw out in her defense.

THIS.
if she wants to be the professional artist she claims to be, she should act like a professional. and that means informing people when you stop doing your job.
and her fans can jump to her aid all they want, and say this isn't her job, but you know what?
it is, or at least it was. she lived off the money she made from hinabn. she wanted it to be her career.
she has conducted herself poorly.

Wow, you're an asshole ._.' She may be fine physically, but what if someone close to her is hurt or perhaps dead? What if she's having emotional issues? She's not a dick, you are.

It would take her less than a minute to post a comment saying as much, or to ask someone she trusted to do so for her. I don't mind being "the asshole" but honestly I really do feel for whatever issues she might be having. I enjoyed her comics, I don't feel entitled to more if she doesn't want to do anymore. What I'm saying is it's incredibly rude to just disappear without making some sort of small effort to let your fans know what's going on. There are a lot of people worried about her and supporting her even now. Are we not worth the five seconds it takes post a comment and to tell us what's up? Even something like "sorry guys I just don't want to do comics anymore" would put a lot of people's minds at ease, and allow us to move on. Maybe I was harsh in my original post, but I find this sort of conduct in very bad taste and it disappoints me to see an artist I really admire acting this way.

Oh, gosh, sorry. I forgot you were entitled to a free webcomic update whenever you felt like it. It totally slipped my mind that you have complete rights to knowing every detail of her life. And I'm so sorry you were disappointed by someone you didn't actually know.

Sorry that the Internet and Tessa Stone don't exist for your convenience and entertainment!

Wow. What if someone close to her died or is hurt, or maybe she's emotionally unstable? I would take priority in my family, friends, and mental state before caring for people on the internet that I have never met in real life before. She can have a break, not matter how long, but she still gets shit-talked about by people like you.

As comforting as this news is, it doesn't really make me feel better. Not really.

I didn't know Tess. I read her comic, and that's about the extent of my knowledge of her and her work. She may be fine, and I'm glad for her, but as far as I know, her comic is dead. There's nothing that pains me more than a work left unfinished.

I still fret over Elf Only Inn, and I don't want to have to add Hanna is Not a Boy's Name to my fretting list.

So she's fine, yet hasn't gotten a chance to let us know what's up for /how/ many months? We are the fans that made her famous, I remember the day she told us how excited she was that she was able to quit her day job because she was making enough off of HiNaBN. We gave her that freedom to do what she loved, and she ignores us for months like we don't matter, like she doesn't care about her legacy or reputation.
I can't say that I'm even mad. Just extremely disappointed in her lack of responsibility and character.

So.. You think that her not updating something that was personal to her and she CHOSE to do of her own accord means she doesn't have character or responsibility?
That's just silly. Creating a comic isn't like feeding a baby (Though some fans might act like it- like they have the right to demand more)
What your saying is like getting upset at someone for ceasing to write a journal on their site that they orchestrated and created on their own.

I can understand being disappointed, but assuming that it has anything to do with responsibility or character without even knowing the circumstances is more than a little hasty.

The problem isn't that she stopped.

The problem is that she stopped and said NOTHING ABOUT IT. Not even a 'sorry, I just can't do this anymore.'

That makes her look like a flake to all her fans, which she totally is. I may love what she's done in making the Hannaverse, but I can accept that she made a mistake in not telling us what's up.

I know that it's incredibly frustrating to follow something and have it just stop. It's happened to many things I've followed over the years. Yeah it's a pain, but I don't think it says anything about the creators character, especially if you don't even know the circumstances of it stopping. It seems silly and kind of selfish to me, to expect something for free and get upset when you stop getting it.

Notice that I'm not complaining about a lack of updates.

Rather, I'm complaining that she didn't have the common courtesy to warn us that she was quitting her comic.

It says something about her character that she can't just say 'hey, I'm done with this.' She doesn't have to say why. Just that she's done.

IS she done? I'm not presuming to know, especially since it hasn't even been more than a few months..
And I guess it's just me, but I don't see why that says anything about a persons character. I may just have lower standards.

No, there is nothing wrong with not updating a webcomic, I never said that. There /is/ something wrong with ditching something you cared about without any regard for the people who made you successful.

No, she doesn't /really/ owe us anything, she owes herself a lot, though. By ditching this comic without telling anyone, she took a LOT from herself.

Heaven forbid shes in a position where she can't write...
This just sounds extremely selfish. I mean she could be facing anything from family trauma to something as simple as having her internet cut off.

She'll get to us when she gets to us. Or maybe she wont. We're her fans, we don't own her.

So maybe she broke her all fingers, and she's got NO ONE that she can ask to just send a little note out to her fans online.
Or maybe she's had "family trauma" for /four months/ and it has somehow stopped her from being able to go online or ask someone to do it for her.
Or maybe her internet got cut off and she doesn't have a library or internet cafe she can go to.

Those are all ridiculous and make no sense. If you can give me one situation that /makes sense/ and accounts for her absence, I'm all ears.

Maybe shes human and has something else to worry about other than the internet?
Slight possibility.
Yes she could have gotten someone else to get on the computer for her but maybe there's something bigger than the internet going on right now?

Maybe you weren't there, but she mentioned once how she was "finally able to quit my job at Starbucks" because she making enough off of HiNaBN. So it's not just the internet, it was her livelihood. By leaving indefinitely like this, she basically quit her job with no warning or explanation to all the people who pay her. Her fans.

By "being there" I assume you mean did I read the post in which she mentioned it. And yes, I was "there." All the more reason to believe something is blocking her from actually getting the word out. She has fans but she also has a right to her privacy. Like I said before, we're her fans, we don't own her. And as her fans its safe to assume she wouldn't just hop off the face of the planet without a valid reason. As far as I've seen she does the entire comic by herself; the art, the story line, the planning.
Shes not a tv celebrity doing some reality show. She has a right to her privacy. If she's ever ready to come back, she will.

The people who paid her for things is another story, how ever. Yes, I'd want my money back and I'd wonder what is going on. But again, I highly doubt shes the kind of person who'd put out this much work on a comic and then run off with peoples money just for shits and giggles.
In addition, like you said, "She quit her job." Think about that. Do you honestly thing she'd just ignore her fans on purpose after being able to do something like that?
I don't disagree with the thought of having some sign that shes ok directly from her. What I do disagree with is the idea that she owes her life to us.

Just...let it be. If she comes back, she comes back. If she doesn't, its alright to be sad about it but move on.

I agree wholeheartedly. She has the right to privacy and she probably will get back to Hanna when she has the opportunity. It would be horrible if Hanna turned out like Vampirates, but the only thing to do in those situations is just move on. I honestly do hope that she continues Hanna, though. I just flat out love it. Have since I first read it. The storyline, the characters, and especially the art style just inspire me to get creative. It's interesting and unique. I like it more than anime, and for me that's saying something! I honestly wish her the best and continue to hope that she decides to continue Hanna. But that doesn't mean that I'll throw a tantrum if she doesn't.

Do you know how stressful and intimidating it is to suddenly jump from something that you do for fun to doing it PROFESSIONALLY? It's a whole new ball game. On top of that she could be going through ANYTHING right now, which she doesn't really have to explain to us. And you may think that it speaks against her character, but she is still human and entitled to whatever time and space she can get. She owes us nothing, not even finishing the comic. So enjoy what there is and hope for the best for the future.

Well "yo" this is nothing new.
I'm also disappointed that she never finished Lock and Key but its nothing surprising. These things happen.

If you were disappointed with that then you should of just said...
"We are the fans that made her famous," and "We gave her that freedom to do what she loved" make it sound like more than just that.

Not angry or anything like that but I hope I'm getting my point across?
